Tired Eyes, Tired Look: What's Really Causing Your Dark Circles and Puffiness

(And How to Fix Them)

Layer 129

If you've ever been asked "are you tired?" on a day you actually slept fine, you already know — the eye area shows wear faster than anywhere else on the face. The skin around the eyes is thinner than skin anywhere else on the body, has almost no oil glands, and moves constantly with every blink, squint, and smile. In Singapore, that fragile skin is also dealing with long hours under aircon, blue light from screens, humidity, and the kind of late nights that come with city living. It's no surprise the eye area is often the first place visible ageing and fatigue show up — well before fine lines appear anywhere else.

The good news: most eye concerns are very treatable once you understand what's actually causing them, because "tired eyes" is rarely just one problem.

Dark Circles Aren't All the Same

There are three different causes of dark circles, and they need different approaches:

  • Pigmentation-related circles — a brownish tone caused by excess melanin, often worsened by sun exposure or rubbing the eyes.

  • Vascular circles — a bluish-purple tint caused by blood vessels showing through very thin under-eye skin, often worse when tired or dehydrated.

  • Structural (hollow) circles — shadowing caused by volume loss or the natural contour of the under-eye area, which becomes more noticeable with age.

Most people actually have a combination of two. This is why a single eye cream rarely solves the problem on its own — it can hydrate and brighten, but it can't address blood flow or hollowing.

Common Signs You Have Sensitive Skin

Puffiness Is Usually a Circulation and Fluid Problem

Morning puffiness happens when fluid pools under the eyes overnight, often made worse by salt intake, allergies, poor sleep, or sluggish lymphatic drainage. Because the eye area has very little supportive tissue, even small amounts of fluid retention are highly visible. This is also why puffiness tends to build up gradually with age — circulation and lymphatic flow naturally slow down over time.

Why Singapore's Environment Makes It Worse

A few local factors make eye concerns more common here than in cooler, drier climates:

  • Air-conditioning dehydrates the thin eye-area skin faster than the rest of the face, making fine lines more visible.

  • Screen time (phones, laptops, constant blue light) increases eye strain, which tightens the muscles around the eyes and contributes to fatigue-related puffiness.

  • Humidity and heat can increase fluid retention throughout the day, especially if you're commuting or outdoors often.

  • UV exposure, even on cloudy days, gradually darkens pigmentation-prone under-eye skin.

What You Can Do at Home

Home care can genuinely improve mild puffiness and dehydration lines, though it has limits with pigmentation and structural hollowing:

  1. Use a dedicated eye product, not just your face moisturizer—the skin barrier here is different and needs gentler, targeted ingredients.

  2. Apply with your ring finger, tap gently rather than rubbing, to avoid stretching the delicate skin.

  3. Cold compress in the morning helps constrict blood vessels and reduce puffiness quickly before you head out.

  4. Always wear sunscreen around the eye area (a mineral-based one is gentler) to prevent pigmentation from worsening.

  5. Sleep with your head slightly elevated if morning puffiness is a recurring issue — it reduces overnight fluid pooling.

When It's Time for a Professional Eye Treatment

If dark circles and puffiness persist despite good sleep and a solid home routine, the cause is likely deeper than surface hydration — and that's where professional eye treatment makes the difference. At Annabelle Skin, our Luminating Eye Care treatments are designed around the three different causes above, rather than treating all "tired eyes" the same way:

  • Guasa Energizing Eye Treatment — a traditional facial massage technique adapted for the eye area, used to boost circulation and ease tension around the eyes, helping reduce the look of fatigue.

  • RF (Radio Frequency) Anti-Wrinkle Eye Treatment — gently heats the deeper layers of skin to encourage firmness and smoothness, targeting fine lines and early signs of sagging around the eyes.

  • Slimlight Lymphatic Eye Treatment — focuses on lymphatic drainage to address puffiness at its source, particularly helpful if you tend to wake up with swollen or heavy-looking eyes.

Because these treatments target circulation, firmness, and drainage rather than just surface hydration, results tend to be visible faster than home care alone — especially for puffiness and fatigue-related dullness.

Your Eyes Deserve Their Own Skincare Plan

The eye area ages differently from the rest of your face, so it makes sense to treat it differently too. Whether your main concern is dark circles, puffiness, or the first signs of fine lines, a proper skin assessment can help identify which of the three causes is really behind it — and which treatment will actually make a visible difference.
